We wanted to take a moment and share some practical advice about the proper way to lift heavy objects. All Exclusive Transportation Services, Inc. cares about your well-being. The last thing we want to see is one of our customers hurting themselves while lifting something heavy. If we can help to avoid at least one injury, it will be worth it.
With improper lifting technique, you can injure your back, arms or legs. You will want to keep the following checklist in mind if you are faced with having to lift some heavy boxes or furniture.
The Proper Way to Lift Heavy Objects
- It pays to know what’s heavy
Make sure that you take a pen or marker and Mark all boxes that are heavy. Boxes that contain books, for example, would be a good candidate to be marked as heavy. Use light tack (less sticky) masking tape, the kind that will not damage your furniture to mark heavy. Now that you know what items should be approached carefully because of their weight you’re ready to move these heavy objects without surprises. - Lift close to your body
Lifting heavier boxes or items like photo booths closer to your body will give you a good center of gravity and make you a more stable lifter. Watch your grip and keep the item close to your body. - Lift with your legs, not your back
One of the most common causes of back, shoulder, and arm injuries during a move is not using your legs to lift. Your leg muscles are way stronger than your back muscles, take advantage of that strength and lift which your legs, not your back. - Wear a belt or back support
For a minimal investment, you can buy a back brace belt and wear that for extra protection against backaches and back injuries. Back support belts keep your lifting posture straight and help to prevent harm to your back muscles. - If it’s too heavy, stop, get help before you hurt yourself
If the object has an awkward shape an irregular form or is simply just too heavy to lift on your own, don’t be a hero! You can hurt your back real bad. Don’t be shy it’s better to be safe than sorry, get help to lift it.
